Waterfalls of Karnataka

The Western Ghats in Karnataka make it geographically suitable to have hundreds of waterfalls. The monsoon season from June to September adds power to these waterfalls, making it quite scenic. Here’s a list of waterfalls of Karnataka we have explored in the region

Shimoga

  • Jog falls: One of the best in India with 4 streams Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket, across Linganamakki dam. Closest town is siddapura

Belgaum

  • Gokak falls: Ghataprabha river plunges on a rocky surface here. The area is famous for “Kardant”, a sweet dish made from nuts
  • Gudchinamakki: River Markandeya flowing in small steps across a wide region. This falls is 15 km from Gokak

Mandya

  • Shivanasamudra: One of the largest falls in Karnataka, river Kaveri takes a high plunge down here
  • Gaganachukki, Barachukki: Twin waterfalls close to each other. You can enjoy coracle rides under Barachukki

Uttara Kannada

  • Apsarakonda: River Sharavathi reaches the sea near this falls, with a small lake nearby.
  • Unchalli: River Aghanashini takes a plunge here across 380+ feet
  • Magod: You can see this magnificent falls from a view point. There is no clean pathway to go down
  • Sathodi: A wide falls amidst a thick forest. If you are lucky, you can find tigers here
  • Vibhuti: Close to Yana rocks about 8 km away

Chikmagalur

  • Hanumanagundi falls: Quite a trek to reach down, but completely worth the effort. One of our favorite places
  • Hebbe: Cozy falls amidst a coffee estate
  • Sirimane: Can be combined with Sringeri temple visit

Udupi

  • Koodlu theertha falls: Nice falls amidst the forests of Hebri, with river river Seetha flowing across the trail. You can see loin tailed macaques on the way if you are lucky
  • Jomlu Theerta: Again, a falls in between a forest reserve. It has a cave-like structure beneath the waterflow which is entered on festive days

Coorg

  • Abbey: Nice falls in between a coffee estate
  • Devaragundi: Small falls across a trail that goes through arecanut farm

Chamarajanagar

  • Hogenkal falls: On the border of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Take a coracle ride to go close to waterfalls
