Places to visit in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Dwarka, Bhavnagar, Modhera, Gir, Kutch are the most prominent places to visit in Gujarat

I spent first four years of my life in Ahmedabad, which is in itself a UNESCO World Heritage city. Gujrat has one of the largest vegetarian population, so you can find wide variety of dishers for a vegetarian palette. Some of the must try food include Dhokla, Jalebi-Phaphda, Khandvi, Aamras, and a good overall Thali that can serve like a tasting menu

Uttarayan is a popular festival for kite flying. It falls around January 14th. Witness sky full of kites if you are around during this period

Ahmedabad

Gandhi Ashram: The place where Mahatma Gandhi spent his life. Dandi march started from here in 1930. You can see his famous charaka, the three wise monkeys here

Sabarmati river front: Nicely developed walking trail along the river

Akshardham temple: Dedicated to Lord Swami Narayan. Open on all days except Mondays

Kankaria Lake: Has a nice garden at the centre, musical fountain and a summer palace of Sultan Qutub-ud-din called Nagina wadi

Vastrapur Lake: Articial lake near IIM Ahmedabad

Law Garden: Has a nice market around the area

Juma Masjid: Built by Ahmad Shah in the 14th century from yellow standstone, many pillars and somes adorn this masjid

Adalaj: Has a nice temple and a step well

Nal Sarovar: About an hour away from Ahmedabad, this lake is home to various migratory birds in the winters from November to February

Dwarka

About 120 km from Jamnagar, 225 km from Rajkot. Lord Krishna temple is one of the most revered places. The original places is beleived to be under sea. Bet Dwarka is an island you can visit from the mainland Dwarka. This island is supposed to be the place where Krishna met his friend Sudama

There are many temples apart from Dwarkadish mandir like Hanuman temple, Nageshwar temple, and a light house at the beach

Bhavnagar

Black buck Sanctuary: Protected area for Krishna mrug/ black bucks. These animals are revered by Bishnoi community in Gujrat and Rajasthan

Lothal: 2 hours away from Bhavnagar midway from Ahmedabad. This Harappan archeological site has many pot furnaces and ruins

Palitana: 50 km from Bhavnagar, Palitana is a holy place for Jains with a large temples. There more than 800 temples on Mount Satrunjaya

Junagadh: Home to Uperkot fort built by Mauryan king Chandragupta. There are Buddhist caves, mosques and wells inside fort area

Somnath: Close to the shores, about 2 hours from Junagadh, Somnath has one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples in India

Gir: Home to National Sanctuary for Asiatic Lions

Modhera

The exquisite Sun temple in Mehsana district was built by Chalukyan king Bhima I. The steps on the lake are elaborate with multiple layers and multiple descents. The Sabha Mandapa has many carved pillars and nice ceiling. The temple hosts a 3 day dance festival during Uttarayan around January 14th
